- This standard specifies the classification and code, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, packaging, marking, transportation, storage and safety of petroleum fuel oil (properly pretreated before use) for marine diesel engines and boilers. Fuel oils that meet this standard are also applicable For stationary diesel engines and other marine machinery of the same or similar manufacture, this standard specifies 4 types of distillate fuel oils, one of which is for emergency use of diesel engines, and 6 types of residual fuel oils,
