1.1 This standard specifies the determination method for the total sulfur content of petroleum and petroleum products that are single-phase and liquid at room temperature, liquid when properly heated, or soluble in hydrocarbon solvents. This standard is applicable to the determination of diesel oil, jet fuel, kerosene, other distillates, naphtha, residual oil, lubricating base oil, hydraulic oil, crude oil, motor gasoline, alcohol-containing gasoline and biodiesel. 1.2 Use the ASTM D6259 statistical process to calculate the combined determination limit value of this standard to be 3 mg/kg. 1.2.1 For a specific laboratory instrument, the determination limit and precision depend on the power of the instrument's x-ray tube (low or high power), the type of sample, and the specific operation of the laboratory for this method. 1.3 For samples with a sulfur content exceeding 4.6% (mass fraction), the sulfur content of the sample can reach the applicable range of this standard by diluting the sample. Diluted samples will result in higher errors than the undiluted samples mentioned in Chapter 14. 1.4 Volatile samples (such as high vapor pressure gasoline or light hydrocarbons) may not meet the precision of this standard because of the loss of selectivity to light components during analysis. 1.5 A basic assumption of this standard is that the matrix material of the standard sample and the sample to be tested are closely matched or different from the matrix material specified in 12.2. Differences in the mass ratio of hydrocarbons between the standard sample and the sample to be tested or the presence of other interfering elements or substances (see Table 1) will cause a mismatch in the matrix. 1.6 This standard adopts the SI International System of Units. 1.7 This standard only describes some special hazards related to the test process, but does not mention all safety issues. Therefore, users should establish appropriate safety and protection measures and formulate corresponding management systems before using this standard.
