Scope
1.1 This part includes the design, preparation and application of pre-cracked specimens for studying the susceptibility of metals to stress corrosion cracking under increasing load or increasing displacement. See GB/T 15970.6 for tests under constant load or constant displacement. The term "metal" in this section also includes alloys. 1.2 Pre-cracked specimens are not suitable for evaluating thin products such as sheet or wire because of the need to maintain elastic restraint at the crack tip. It is usually suitable for evaluating thick products such as plates, bars and forgings. Pre-cracked specimens are also suitable for weldments. 1.3 Pre-cracked specimens may be quantitatively loaded by using a monotonically increasing load or displacement device at the loading point. 1.4 One of the outstanding advantages of pre-cracked specimens is that the critical defect size of components with known geometry and known stress can be calculated from the measured data. If the defect size exceeds a critical value, stress corrosion cracking may occur. Pre-cracked specimens can also be used to determine the rate of stress corrosion crack growth. 1.5 A major advantage of this test is that it takes into account the potential effect of dynamic strain on the stress corrosion cracking threshold. 1.6 At a sufficiently low loading rate, this method can determine the Kicc value more quickly, and this value will be less than or equal to the value determined by the constant load or displacement method.
