Scope
This part of GB/T 15970.3 is applicable to the design, preparation and use procedures of U-shaped test pieces for studying the susceptibility of metals to stress corrosion corrosion. The term "metal" in this section includes alloys. U-shaped test specimens can be used to test a variety of product types. Primarily used for sheet, slab or flat extruded material which conveniently provides flat test pieces of rectangular cross-section, but can also be used for wire or rod or machined test pieces with circular cross-section, and also for welded components. U-type test specimens are often used to determine whether a metal is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in a given environment. In the laboratory it is used to screen the susceptibility of materials to specific applications, and in the use environment to evaluate the risk of damage. The main advantage of the test is that it is simple and suitable for factory use. Its disadvantage is that the stress cannot be quantified accurately. If quantification is required, a loading method can be selected.
