Scope
This International Standard describes three methods, A, B and C, for determining the flash point of flammable liquids, liquids containing suspended solids, liquids that tend to flash under the test conditions using the Pensky-Martens closed cup tester To determine the surface film of biodiesel and other liquids in the temperature range from 40 °C to 370 °C. CAUTION - For certain mixtures, a flash point as defined is not observed; instead, a significant increase in the size of the test flame (no halo effect) and a change in the color of the test flame from blue to yellow-orange may occur. Continued heating can result in significant burning of vapors outside the crucible, posing a potential fire hazard. NOTE 1 Although kerosene with a flash point above 40 °C can technically be tested in accordance with this International Standard, it is common practice to test kerosene in accordance with ISO 13736. Similarly, lubricating oils are usually tested according to ISO 2592. Method A applies to distillate fuels (diesel, biodiesel blends, heating oil and jet fuel), new and in-use lubricating oils, varnishes and paints and other homogeneous liquids not falling within the scope of Methods B or C. Method B applies to residual fuel oils, waste residues, used lubricating oils, mixtures of liquids with solids, liquids which tend to form a surface film under test conditions or which have a kinematic viscosity such that they are suitable for stirring and heating under the conditions of Method A not heated evenly. Method C applies to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) as specified in specifications such as: B. EN 14214 [11] or ASTM D 6751 [13] are specified. This International Standard does not apply to water-based varnishes and paints. NOTE 2 Water-based varnishes and paints can be tested according to ISO 3679. Liquids that contain traces of volatile materials can be tested according to ISO 1523 or ISO 3679.
