This standard introduces the procedures for size distribution statistics, chemical classification and rating of non-metallic inclusions in steel using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The scanning electron microscope is equipped with X-ray energy spectrum analysis and automatic image analysis functions. This standard recommends three inspection methods. Method 1 mainly classifies inclusions according to their morphology. Method 2 mainly classifies inclusions according to their chemical composition. Methods 1 and 2 are applicable to the microscopic assessment of non-metallic inclusions larger than 2 μm in rolled or forged steels with a compression ratio greater than or equal to 3. Method three is used to determine the specific details of a certain type of inclusions, such as volume fraction, number fraction and other stereological parameters, and is suitable for the statistical classification of inclusions of all sizes (including below 2 μm) in various slabs or steels. This standard is only a recommended inspection method for non-metallic inclusions, and does not specify the acceptance level of any steel. This standard does not address safety issues related to the application.
