Scope
This part of ISO 12966 specifies a method for the determination of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) obtained by transesterification or esterification of fats, oils and fatty acids using capillary gas chromatography (GLC). By applying this part of ISO 12966, fatty acid methyl esters from C8 to C24, including saturated fatty acid methyl esters, monounsaturated cis and trans fatty acid methyl esters and polyunsaturated cis and trans fatty acid methyl esters can be separated. The process is suitable for raw, refined, partially or fully hydrogenated fats, oils and fatty acids obtained from animal and vegetable sources. This method is not suitable for the analysis of milk, fats and oils from ruminants, or products supplemented with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Milk and milk products (or fat from milk and milk products) are excluded from the scope of this part of ISO 12966. This part of ISO 12966 is not suitable for di-, tri-, polymerized and oxidized fatty acids and fats and oils.
