This standard specifies the method for determining the minimum temperature at which brittle failure does not occur when rubber materials are subjected to impact under specified conditions or the temperature at which brittle failure occurs for some samples. This standard applies to the determination of low temperature brittleness of vulcanized rubber or thermoplastic rubber. Because the brittle temperature of the material is affected by the test conditions and the impact velocity, the brittle temperature measured in this way is not necessarily the lowest temperature that the material can be used. The data obtained by this method can only be used to predict the behavior of rubber materials at low temperatures when the deformation conditions are similar to those specified in the test. Three procedures are described. Procedure A: Determination of the brittleness temperature; Procedure B: Determination of the brittleness temperature of 50% failure; Procedure C: Impact the specimen at the specified temperature. Procedure C is used to classify rubber materials and evaluate the compliance of rubber materials.
