Scope
This standard specifies the procedure for determining the lowest temperature at which vulcanized rubber is subjected to impact under specified conditions without brittle failure. The brittleness temperature thus determined (multiple sample method) is not necessarily the lowest temperature at which the material can be used. Because the brittle temperature (multi-specimen method) will change with the contact conditions, especially the impact velocity. Data obtained by this method are therefore predictive of the behavior of vulcanizates at low temperatures only in applications where deformation conditions are similar to those specified in this test. This standard specifies two procedures: procedure A is to determine the brittleness temperature (multi-specimen method), and procedure B is to impact the specimen at a specified temperature. Procedure B is used for the classification and identification of vulcanized rubber. Note: See GB/T 12584-90 for a similar test for the determination of rubber-coated fabrics.
