This document specifies the semi-automatic or fully automatic phased array ultrasonic testing of fusion welded joints of metallic materials with a base metal thickness of not less than 6 mm. This document is applicable to full-penetration welded joints such as low-alloy or fine-grained steel plates, pipes, and containers where the base metal and the weld seam are both low-alloy or fine-grained steel. The inspection of welded joints made of other materials can also be used as a reference. This document presents the advantages and limitations of phased array ultrasonic techniques for detecting, locating, quantifying, and characterizing discontinuities in fusion welded joints. In manufacturing process testing, pre-service testing and in-service testing, phased array ultrasonic technology can be used independently or in combination with other nondestructive testing methods or techniques. This document specifies 4 detection levels, and different levels correspond to different defect detection rates. This document specifies that discontinuities may be evaluated on the basis of length and maximum echo amplitude (equivalent reflector size), or length and height. This document does not specify discontinuous acceptance levels. This document does not apply to the automatic phased array ultrasonic testing of welds in the manufacturing process of steel products specified in ISO10893 8, ISO10893 11 and ISO3183.
