This standard specifies the thermogravimetric analysis method for determining the content of total organic matter, carbon black and ash in vulcanized rubber and mixed rubber. This standard applies to the vulcanizates or compounds used alone or in combination with the following rubbers: Natural rubber (or isoprene rubber). Butadiene rubber. SBR. Butyl rubber. Ethylene Propylene Rubber. Other vulcanizates or compounds may also be analyzed if the applicability of the method has been previously tested with known vulcanizates or compounds containing similar components. This standard does not apply to those rubbers that form carbonaceous residues on cracking, such as those containing chlorine or nitrogen. This standard does not apply to various vulcanizates or rubber compounds containing compounding ingredients that form carbon-containing residues during cracking, such as vulcanizates or rubber compounds containing cobalt salts, lead salts and phenolic resins. This standard does not apply to vulcanizates or rubber compounds containing inorganic fillers that decompose or lose water of crystallization within the test temperature range. If it must be used, appropriate corrections must be made for known packing properties. For vulcanized rubber or compound rubber with high sulfur content such as hard rubber, the calculation of the total amount of high polymer needs to be corrected.
