This standard specifies the preparation method of fatty acid methyl ester. This standard covers the method for preparing fatty acid methyl esters from animal and vegetable oils, fatty acids and fatty acid salts. The following three methyl esterification methods are specified: a) boron trifluoride method (see Chapter 3); b) trimethylsulfur hydroxide method (see Chapter 4); c) transesterification method (see Chapter 5 ). This standard is applicable to various analytical processes such as gas chromatography, thin layer chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy that require methyl ester derivatives.
