Scope: This standard specifies the general method for determining the content of free water or crystal water in samples by Karl Fischer visual method and coulometric method. This standard is applicable to the determination of free water or crystal water content in most organic and inorganic solid and liquid chemical products. This standard is not applicable to the determination of moisture in samples that can react with the main components of Karl Fischer reagent and produce water and samples that can reduce iodine or oxidize iodide. In some cases, samples require pretreatment measures, which are specified in the corresponding national standards. When there is no coulometric instrument, the visual method can be used, which is a direct titration method, but can only be used for colorless solutions. The coulometric method includes direct titration and back titration, no matter which one is used, it is more accurate, therefore, the coulometric method is recommended.
