Scope
This International Standard specifies two methods (Method A and Method B) for determining the tensile impact strength of plastics under specified conditions. The tests can be described as tensile tests with a relatively high deformation rate. These methods can be used for stiff materials (see ISO 472 for definition), but are particularly useful for materials that are too flexible or too thin for ISO 179 and ISO 180 impact testing. These methods are used to examine the behavior of specified test specimens at specified impact speeds and to determine the brittleness or toughness of test specimens within the limits of the test conditions. These methods are suitable for test specimens made from molding compounds as well as for test specimens taken from molded parts and semi-finished products (for example from injection molded parts, laminates or from extruded or cast panels). Results obtained from testing molded specimens of different dimensions may not necessarily be the same. Likewise, test specimens made from molded parts do not have to produce the same results as test specimens of the same dimensions formed directly from the molding compound. Test results obtained on test specimens made from molding compounds cannot be directly transferred to molded parts of any shape, since the measured values can depend on the shape of the molded part and the conditions of molding. Results from procedures A and B may or may not be comparable. These methods are not suitable as a data source for part design calculations. However, information about specific material behavior can be obtained by testing different types of specimens prepared under different conditions and by testing at different temperatures. The two different processes are suitable for both production control and quality control.
