This section applies to all machinery (stationary and mobile) that must have fixed access facilities. This section applies to stairs, steps and guardrails as machine parts. This standard may also apply to stairs, steps and guardrails installed as part of a building for access, provided that the primary function of this part of the building is to provide fixed means of access to machinery. This section also applies to stairs, steps and guardrails that are not permanently attached to the machine and that may be removed or moved aside during certain operations of the machine (for example, tool change on large presses). For the major hazards in this part, see Chapter 4 of GB 17888.1.
