Scope
This standard specifies the method for the determination of the non-volatile content of paints, varnishes, paint bases for paints and varnishes, polymer dispersions and polycondensation resins such as phenolic resins (resol, novolac solutions, etc.). This standard also applies to dispersions containing pigments, fillers and other additives such as thickening aids and coalescents. This standard can also be used for unplasticized polymer dispersions and latexes whose non-volatile residues (mainly polymeric material and small amounts of auxiliaries such as emulsifiers, protective colloids, stabilizers, solvents added as coalescents, Especially preservatives used in latex concentrates) shall be chemically stable under the test conditions. For plasticizable samples, the non-volatile residue usually includes the plasticizer. Note 1: The non-volatile content of the sample is not an absolute quantity, but depends on the heating temperature and time used in the determination. Therefore, when using this method, due to the retention of solvent, thermal decomposition and volatilization of low molecular weight components, the obtained non-volatile residue content is only a relative value rather than a true value. Therefore, this method is mainly used for different batches of similar products. test. Note 2: This method is applicable to synthetic latex, as long as the heating time is appropriate (ISO 124 stipulates that the mass loss of a 2 g sample should be less than 0.5 mg during two consecutive heating periods during heating). Note 3: Methods for determining non-volatile matter usually also include drying methods using infrared or microwave radiation. Since these methods are not universal, they cannot be standardized. Some polymer components decompose under the processing conditions giving erroneous results. ISO 3233:1998 Paints and varnishes, by measuring the dry coating density to determine the volume fraction of non-volatile matter, it specifies the method for determining the volume fraction of non-volatile matter in paints, varnishes and related products.
