Scope: 1.1 This section is intended as a minimum guide, outlining the fundamentals of ultrasonic testing using electromagnetic ultrasonic transducers. 1.2 This section describes the non-contact generation and detection of ultrasonic waves on metallic materials (ferromagnetic or non-ferromagnetic) by applying an electromagnetic field. This section also describes the principles of operation, basic design principles, advantages, and limitations of electromagnetic ultrasonic testing. 1.3 This section is intended to provide a basic reference to help confirm the effectiveness of electromagnetic ultrasonic transducers in specific applications. This section gives basic information on the design and operation of electromagnetic ultrasonic transducers. Instructions are also given for generating waves in various modes, including longitudinal, shear, Rayleigh, and Lamb waves, using electromagnetic ultrasonic transducers. 1.4 This part does not contain detailed methods for the special application of electromagnetic ultrasonic transducers, and it is not recommended to use electromagnetic ultrasonic transducers for actual testing without sufficient testing. Some successful application examples of electromagnetic ultrasonic transducers are briefly described in Chapter 9. 1.5 This section does not address safety issues related to use. It is the user's responsibility to formulate beneficial safety and health procedures and determine their scope of application before use.
