Scope

This standard provides recommended methods for collecting representative samples of pipeline crude oil and liquid petroleum products by automated means. This standard does not apply to the sampling of liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas. The primary purpose of this standard is to provide guidance for the specification, testing, operation, maintenance, and monitoring of crude oil samplers. Crude oil sampling operations provide representative samples for the following determination items: a) Crude oil composition and quality; b) Total water content; c) Other impurities that cannot be used as components of transported crude oil. If the sampling operations for determinations a), b) and c) conflict with each other, separate sampling may be required. This standard covers all aspects of sample handling involving the transfer of collected samples to laboratory instruments. This standard describes sampling methods and operations believed to be currently possible to collect the most representative samples, thereby enabling accurate determination of moisture content. However, the accuracy of the water content determination of in-tube samples collected with an automatic sampler depends not only on the configuration and characteristics of the individual components that make up the sampling system, but also on the accuracy of the subsequent analysis method. Chapter 16 introduces theoretical methods for evaluating automated sampling systems and analyzing total test uncertainty. Chapter 15 describes practical testing procedures for use in the field. The parties involved should usually reach an agreement that defines the allowable accuracy range for a particular automated sampling system. In Table 4 of Chapter 15, the performance of the automatic sampling system is classified according to the accuracy index of the actual test results. These indicators serve as a reference for qualified performance and the basis for individual agreements.
