Scope
This standard specifies the cracking damage resistance test of metals subjected to tensile stress in an acidic aqueous solution environment containing hydrogen sulfide. For carbon steels and alloy steels with high susceptibility to SSC (sulfide stress corrosion cracking), EC (environmental cracking) resistance tests are usually performed at room temperature. For other alloys, the relationship between EC sensitivity and temperature is more complicated. This standard specifies the reagents, samples and equipment used in the test, the performance of the base metal and the sample, and the test procedures to be followed. This standard includes four test methods: Method A: Tensile test; Method B: Bending beam test; Method C: C-ring test; Method D: Double cantilever beam (DCB) test. Chapters 1 to 8 give general descriptions of the four test methods. Chapters 9 to 12 give the test methods to be followed for each type of sample. The applicability of this test method is given at the beginning of each test method (Chapter 9 to Clause 12). Reporting of test results is also discussed. Metals can be subjected to EC tests at normal temperature and pressure or high temperature and high pressure. For the test at normal temperature and pressure, the test procedure can be summarized as follows: The stressed sample is immersed in an acidic aqueous solution environment containing hydrogen sulfide. EC data are obtained by applying appropriate incremental loads. When the test temperature is greater than 27 °C and the test is carried out under normal pressure or high pressure, an alternative test technique is given in Chapter 8. All methods (A, B, C, D) can use this technique. Safety Warning: Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic gas and must be handled with care (see Appendix A).
