This standard specifies the volumetric titration using Karl Fischer reagent to determine the water content of crude oil. This standard applies to the determination of 0.02% (m/m) to 2% (m/m) water content in crude oil. Sulfur in mercaptans and sulfides (S- or H2S) interferes with this test method. When the sulfur content in these compounds is lower than 500μg/g, there is no obvious interference to the determination. Standard pyridine-containing Karl Fischer reagents or pyridine-free Karl Fischer reagents can be used in this method.
