This standard specifies the first method for the determination of unsaponifiable matter in animal and vegetable oils and fats by extraction with ether. This standard applies to all greases. Not for wax. Moreover, only approximate results can be obtained for oils with high unsaponifiable content, such as marine animal fats. When the climatic conditions or environment do not allow the use of ether, the hexane method can be used.
