This standard specifies the criteria with which gas lighters, as defined in 2.1, are to comply in order to offer the user a reasonable guarantee of safety when used in a normal and non-abusive way, taking into account the present state of the technology without however limiting future develop-ment. The standard specifies, in clause 5, methods of test, the objective of which is to verify that lighters do not inherently present hazards in normal use. This standard also specifies, in clause 4, the instructions and warnings which shall be brought to the attention of the user. This standard does not apply to devices which are specifically designed for uses other than igniting cigarettes, cigars and pipes, such as heaters with incorporated ignition or lamps with incorpor-ated ignition.
