- Scope
- This part of ISO 4629 specifies a titrimetric method for determining free hydroxyl groups in binders and binder solutions for coating materials. The hydroxyl groups can be present as polyhydric alcohols, partial esters, terminal polyester groups or hydroxylated fatty acids. The process is not suitable for resins that contain hydroxyl groups and epoxy groups at the same time because the latter are included in the result. The process is also not suitable for cellulose nitrate and phenolic resins. NOTE 1 If, in the case of binder solutions, only the hydroxyl number of the binder is to be determined, it should be noted that other components of the binder solution may also contain hydroxyl groups. NOTE 2 A method for determining the hydroxyl number of epoxy resins is specified in ISO 7142.
