Scope
This International Standard applies to disposable and reusable woven and non-woven materials used as surgical drapes and other patient protection coverings with a claim to be resistant to laser radiation. The purpose of this International Standard is to provide a standardized method for testing and rating surgical drapes and other patient protection drapes for laser hazards. An appropriate grading system is provided. The purpose of this International Standard is not to serve as a general fire safety regulation and as such other sources of ignition are not covered by this standard. All materials reflect portions of the beam, and it is necessary for the user to decide whether the specular reflection may pose a hazard. However, these measurements are not covered in this International Standard. The test method can be used to evaluate laser-induced flammability properties of non-laser-resistant materials. NOTE Users of products tested using this method are cautioned that the resistance to laser radiation of a surgical drape and/or other patient protection drape depends on the wavelength and that the drape and/or drape is better tested at the wavelength for which their use is intended. When testing using other wavelengths, the power values and types of excitation must be stated explicitly.
