This standard covers the laboratory heat sealing of soft barrier materials and the processing and evaluation of heat seal strength data to determine the heat sealability of materials. This standard does not include verification processes for materials and production equipment. Methods of testing strength or other properties after forming a heat seal are not included in the scope of this standard. This standard applies to heat sealing using hot rod sealing knife type heat sealing machines. This standard is primarily applicable to packaging materials intended to be heat-sealed on commercially available machines with reciprocating heat-sealing knives, such as form-fill-seal (FFS) packaging machines, flat plate heat sealing machines, etc. The duration and heat sealing pressure conditions of this type of machine are different from those of rolling heat sealers.
