Scope
This part of ISO 22007 specifies a method for determining the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity and therefore the specific heat capacity per unit volume of plastics. The experimental arrangement can be carried out in such a way that measurements on test specimens of different sizes are possible. The measurements can be carried out in gaseous environments and under vacuum at different temperatures and pressures. This method is suitable for testing homogeneous and isotropic materials as well as anisotropic materials with a uniaxial structure. The homogeneity of the material extends throughout the specimen and there are no thermal barriers within the area defined by the measuring depth(s) (see 3.2 below) (except in the vicinity of the probe). The method is suitable for materials with thermal conductivity values in the approximate range of 0.010 W m-1 K-1 < < 500 W m-1 K-1, thermal conductivity values in the range of 5 × 10-8 m2 s-1 < < 10-4 m2 s -1, and for temperatures T in the approximate range 50 K < T < 1000 K. NOTE 1 The specific heat capacity per unit volume C can be obtained by dividing the thermal conductivity by the thermal diffusivity, ie C = /, and is in the approximate range of 0.005 MJ m-3 K-1 < C < 5 MJ m-3 K-1. This is also known as volume-specific heat capacity. NOTE 2 If the intention is to determine the thermal resistance or apparent thermal conductivity in the thickness direction, towards an inhomogeneous product (for example a manufactured plate) or a plate made of an inhomogeneous material, reference is made to ISO 8301, ISO 8302 and ISO 472 pointed out. The heat transport properties of liquids can also be determined provided that heat convection is minimized.
