This part of ISO 18218 specifies a method for the determination of alkylphenol (nonylphenol and octylphenol) and alkylphenol ethoxylate (nonylphenol ethoxylate and octylphenol ethoxylate) in leather and processing aids. The analysis is based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The analysis of alkylphenol ethoxylate is carried out by splitting alkylphenol ethoxylate and measuring the released alkylphenol. NOTE ISO 18218-1 and this part of ISO 18218 use different solvents to extract the ethoxylated alkylphenols from leather. The two analytical methods are expected to consistently produce similar tendencies for the content of ethoxylated alkylphenols in leather, but not necessarily produce absolutely identical results.
