Scope
This International Standard specifies the screening method for soils and soil-like materials for selected elements when using hand-held or portable energy-dispersive XRF spectrometers. It is expected that this rapid method will be applied on site to obtain qualitative or semi-quantitative data to support decisions regarding further sampling strategy to determine soil composition. The higher the costs for the pretreatment of the soil samples, the better analytical results can be expected. This International Standard does not specifically specify specific elements to which it applies, as applicability depends on the performance of the device and the objective of the screening. The elements that can be determined are limited by the performance of the measuring instruments used, the concentration of elements present in the soil and by the requirements of the study (e.g. benchmark value). The majority of measuring instruments are not sensitive enough to Hg, Cd, Co, Mo, V and Sb to achieve sufficiently low limits of quantification (LOQ) to meet the requirements (limits or thresholds) established by the regulations of different countries. In this case, other methods must be used to measure these low concentrations. Wet chemical methods based on aqua regia extracts are usually used in combination with optical or mass spectroscopic (MS) methods such as atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) or ICP-MS.
