- This standard specifies test procedures for determining the thermal stability properties of engine oils using a heat pipe tester or other equivalent equipment. This standard is applicable to the determination of the thermal stability performance of engine oils (such as marine engine oils, gasoline engine oils, diesel engine oils and two-stroke engine oils) and is evaluated by method A (heat pipe color rating standard) or method B (sediment quality).
