Scope
This part of the Electromagnetic Compatibility Environment defines the high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) environment, one of the effects of a high-altitude nuclear explosion. To study this topic, two situations need to be considered: ——High-altitude nuclear explosion; ——Low-altitude nuclear explosion. One of the most serious scenarios for civilian systems is a high-altitude nuclear explosion. In this case, other effects of the nuclear explosion, such as detonation, ground impact, thermal radiation and ionizing radiation, will not affect the ground. However, electromagnetic pulses generated by nuclear explosions may cause damage and destruction of communication systems, electronics and power systems, thereby affecting the stability of modern society. The purpose of this section is to establish a general reference for the HEMP environment, select the actual environmental parameters for sensitive equipment, and thus evaluate its sensitivity.
