Scope
This International Standard specifies a method for the gas chromatographic (GC) determination of saturated, olefinic and aromatic hydrocarbon contents in automotive engine fuels and ethanol fuel (E85). In addition, the content of benzene and oxygen-containing compounds as well as the total oxygen content can be determined. NOTE 1 For the purposes of this document, the expressions "% (m/m)" and "% (V/V)" are used to express the mass fraction, µ, and the volume fraction, . This document specifies two procedures, A and B. Method A is applicable to fuels for motor vehicle engines with a total proportion of up to 50% (V/V) aromatics, a total proportion of olefins of approximately 1.5% (V/V) to 30% (V/V), and a proportion of oxygen-containing compounds from 0.8% (V/V) to 15% (V/V), a total oxygen content of about 1.5% (V/V) to about 3.7% (V/V) and a proportion of benzene up to 2% (V/V). The method can also be used to determine ethers with five or more carbon atoms up to levels of 22% (v/v), but no precision data have been determined up to this level. Although this method can be used to determine higher olefin contents up to 50% (v/v), the precision for olefins has only been determined in the range of about 1.5% (v/v) to about 30% (v/v). Although this method was developed specifically for the analysis of gasoline containing oxygen-containing compounds, it can also be applied to other hydrocarbons with similar boiling ranges, such as: B. naphthas and reformates can be used. NOTE 2 For Method A, precision data for oxygen-containing compounds were obtained for automotive fuel samples containing ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE), methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), iso- Contained propanol, iso-butanol, tert-butanol, methanol and ethanol. The precision data determined for methanol did not meet the requirements in
