EN ISO 18772:2014 Soil quality - Guidance on leaching procedures for subsequent chemical and ecotoxicological testing of soils and soil materials (ISO 18772:2008)
This International Standard provides guidance on the appropriate use of elution tests on soil and soil materials to determine elution behavior in the context of effect assessment or for compliance and comparison purposes, including information on the following: the selection of elution tests depending on the Type of problem and the specific characteristics of the various tests; the evaluation of the test results; the limitations of the exams. In this regard, it is important to note that elution tests are not intended to simulate actual on-site conditions (field conditions), but are designed to address the contact between a solid and a liquid phase for various purposes discussed in the present International standard are described. This International Standard applies only to natural, contaminated and agricultural soil and soil materials. This International Standard does not cover issues relating to the elution of waste. Nor does it address the issue of bioavailability of contaminants to living organisms, which ISO 17402 addresses. Elution tests are developed and used for the characterization of the source term. It may be possible to take transport aspects into account in the elution tests if some basic requirements (e.g. hydrodynamic) are known, and thus enable the determination of relevant transport parameters (e.g. retardation factors, particle-bound transport, reduction processes). . When only the term "soil" is specified in this International Standard for ease of writing, the extended term "soil and soil materials" shall be taken into consideration.
