This International Standard specifies three methods (ie one test stamp or two test stamps on a coated panel or two test stamps with one serving as a coated substrate) for determining adhesion strength. According to these procedures, a tear test is carried out on a single or multi-layer coating. These test methods have been found useful in comparing the performance of different coatings in terms of adhesion strength. They are particularly useful in allowing relative evaluations of a series of coated sample panels showing significant differences in the adhesion strength of the coatings. The test can be carried out on numerous substrates. The procedure is different depending on whether it is a deformable substrate, for example thin metal, plastic and wood, or a rigid substrate, for example thick concrete and metal plates. In order to prevent the substrate from bending during the adhesion test, the sandwich structure is usually used. For special purposes, the coating material may, for example, be applied to a test stamp.
