Scope
This part of ISO 17892 specifies methods for determining the grain density of soils. This part of ISO 17892 is applicable to the laboratory determination of the grain density of soil in the context of geotechnical investigations and describes two methods: a pycnometer method using liquid displacement and a pycnometer method using gas displacement. The capillary pycnometer method described in this part of ISO 17892 is applicable to soil types whose grain diameter is less than 4 mm or whose grains have been crushed to 4 mm to meet the requirements. Larger pycnometers are used for coarser materials. The grain size of soils suitable for testing in the gas pycnometer is limited by the dimensions of the sample container of the gas pycnometer used. NOTE 1 This part of ISO 17892 meets the requirements for the determination of grain density of soils in geotechnical exploration and testing in accordance with EN 1997-1 and EN 1997-2. NOTE 2 The presence of dissolved salts in the pore water can affect the results of these experiments. There are methods for compensating dissolved salts, but they go beyond the scope of this standard.
