Scope
This International Standard specifies requirements for the classification of cored wire electrodes for metal arc welding with and without shielding gas of unalloyed steels and fine-grain structural steels with a minimum yield strength of up to 500 MPa or a minimum tensile strength of up to 570 MPa in the welded state or after post-heat treatment. A cored wire electrode can be tested and classified with different protective gases. This International Standard contains a common specification for classification either according to the yield strength and the average impact energy of 47 J of the pure weld metal or according to the tensile strength and the average impact energy of 27 J of the pure weld metal. 1) Sections and tables marked with a suffix "A" can only be used for cored wire electrodes classified according to the yield strength and the average impact energy of 47 J of the pure weld metal according to this International Standard. 2) Sections and tables marked with a suffix "B" can only be used for cored wire electrodes classified according to the tensile strength and the average impact energy of 27 J of the pure weld metal according to this International Standard. 3) Clauses and tables that do not contain a suffix "A" or "B" are applicable to all cored wire electrodes classified according to this International Standard. It is known that the welding properties of cored wire electrodes can be changed by pulse current, but for the purposes of this International Standard it is not permitted to use pulse current to determine electrode classification.
