This part of ISO 18134 specifies the method for determining the water content in the test sample for analysis by drying in an oven. It is intended for use with general analysis samples according to EN 14780. The procedure specified in this part of ISO 18134 applies to all biogenic solid fuels. The water content of biogenic solid fuels (as delivered) is always stated based on the total mass of the test sample (wet mass reference basis). Since biogenic fuels with small particle sizes are highly hygroscopic, their water content changes when the humidity changes, and therefore the water content of the test quantity is determined at the same time as the determination of, for example, the energy content, carbon content and nitrogen content. NOTE The term water content can be misleading when used in the context of biomass materials because untreated biomass often contains varying amounts of volatile compounds (extractants) which can evaporate during oven drying during the determination of water content (see references).
