This standard provides general guidance on the detection and identification of the specific microorganism Candida albicans in cosmetics. Microorganisms classified as specific microorganisms in this standard may be different from microorganisms classified as specific microorganisms in individual countries according to national guidelines or laws. To ensure product quality and consumer safety, appropriate microbiological risk analysis is performed. It is recommended to determine to what types of cosmetic products this standard is applicable. Products considered to have low microbiological risk include products with low water activity, hydro-alcoholic products, and products with very high or low pH. The methods described in this standard are non-selective liquid media (enrichment). It is based on a detection method that involves culturing in a liquid medium and then isolating Candida albicans on a selective agar medium. Depending on the required detection level, other methods can be used as appropriate. As there are many different types of cosmetic products within the scope of this standard, for some products, not all details of this test method may be suitable (e.g. non-water soluble products). Other international standards (e.g. ISO 18415) may be applied, provided that equivalence to the test method presented in this standard has been proven or its validity has been verified.
