Scope
Background noise is omnipresent in analysis equipment, regardless of whether the equipment is applied to the sample or not. This standard relates to a mathematical methodology for estimating the minimum detectable value when the most dominant source of measurement uncertainty is background noise. The minimum detectable value is derived directly and mathematically from inferred statistical characteristics of the background noise. The basic for: Specify the method: ——Extract inferential statistical properties of background noise - Use inferential statistical properties to estimate the standard deviation (SD) or coefficient of variation (CV) of the response variable - Calculate the minimum detectable value based on the SD or CV obtained above. The method described in the standard is useful to ensure detection of a specific nature with various types of measuring equipment where the background noise of the equipment output dominates other factors causing measurement uncertainty. Visible and ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, atomic fluorescence spectroscopy, luminescence spectroscopy, liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography are selected as feasible methods.
