This standard specifies a method for measuring the hardness of a paint film by drawing across the film with a pencil of known hardness. This test method is applicable to single coats of paints, varnishes, and related products or to the top coat of a multi-coat system. This rapid test method is not useful for comparing the pencil hardness of different coatings. This method is more useful for relative grading of a series of painted plates that show marked differences in pencil hardness. This method can only be applied to surfaces with a flat painted surface.
