Scope

This standard specifies a method for measuring the reflectance of the bitrinite component of coal ground under oil immersion using a microscope. This method can be applied to coal from a single coal mine and to mixtures of all grades of coal. Bytrinite reflectance measurements can be used to characterize the constituents in a mixture. The measurement method can calibrate the bitrinite percentage of each component of a mixture or determine the proportions of components in a mixture, especially when the components contain different bitrinite contents. This method requires evaluation of the bitrinite by the experimenter. Reflectance measurements obtained by interpretation of automated microscopy systems that can be processed by a computer are excluded from the scope of this standard.
