This standard covers specifications, design, and testing methods for power transformers and reactors used in semiconductor converter devices. Transformers designed for industrial or general distribution applications of normal alternating current power are not covered. The scope of this standard is limited to applications in all rated power converters. In general, this standard applies to thyristor rectifiers for electrolysis, diode rectifiers for electrolysis, thyristor rectifiers for large drives, thyristor rectifiers for scrap melting furnaces, and diode rectifier feeding inverters for variable speed drives. This standard also covers regulating devices utilized in applications such as step-down regulating transformers or autotransformers. The maximum voltage of the valve windings for the device is limited to 36 kV. This standard is not applicable to transformers for high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission. These are high-voltage transformers and are subject to direct voltage testing. The standard for the complete converter device, including the converter transformer, auxiliary transformer and reactor device (IEC 60146 series or another standard specified for a particular field of application) covers the entire device. May include testing and certification requirements (such as insulation and power loss). This does not diminish the application of the requirements of this standard relating to testing and certification applicable to the converter itself prior to assembly with the rest of the converter device. Certification, service and type testing defined in this standard
