Scope
This standard specifies general specifications and principles for the design of equipment that operates or handles nuclear and radioactive materials in shielded rooms (equipment rooms or hot cells), so as to minimize the operational failure rate of the equipment. This standard applies to equipment with one or more of the following conditions of use: a) the materials being operated or processed may cause serious radiation damage to people or the environment; b) the materials being operated or processed need to be contained or limited to known Scope; c) The materials operated or processed need to meet the following conditions: ——have specific geometric arrangements and shapes; ——the above geometric arrangements and shapes should be within the critical safety conditions determined by a given equipment, such as: A given operating position, the conditions adjacent to the position that maintain the subcriticality of the system are known and remain unchanged; within the given range of operating conditions; within the given range of the process flow. d) The operation and maintenance of the equipment do not allow operators and maintenance personnel to approach directly. Observation of the equipment can only be carried out with the help of shielded observation windows, periscopes or TV monitoring systems. This standard may be applied to the design of equipment for handling materials containing uranium and transuranic elements in various states of matter if the following conditions are met: a) This material will cause unacceptable radiation damage to operators and maintenance personnel; b) It needs to be sealed This material and process dusts and particles, vapors and gases generated in the operation or handling of this material shall be contained and c) any of the conditions listed in 1.2. This standard can be applied to auxiliary and maintenance troubleshooting equipment if the following conditions are met: a) the equipment is installed in a shielded room; b) the equipment has become an integral part of the process equipment configuration, auxiliary equipment or system in the hot room, even if such equipment and System components do not directly contain nuclear and radioactive materials under normal process conditions. This standard can be applied to various radioactive waste treatment equipment if the equipment has any of the conditions listed in 1.2. If the design considerations focus on equipment reliability, material containment, ease of cleaning, safety, or other reasonable requirements, this standard can be selectively used for equipment used in laboratories and experimental factories of R&D units.
