- Scope
- This standard specifies the symbols, test methods, workpiece preparation, strain gauges and instruments, drilling procedures, stress calculations, reports, etc. for the determination of residual stress using the drilling strain relief method on the near surface of isotropic linear elastic materials. This standard is suitable for the determination of residual stress near the surface of workpieces with small plane stress gradients, and can give the magnitude of local residual stress within the drilling boundary. Stresses may be "uniformly distributed" stresses that vary little along depth, or they may be "non-uniformly distributed" stresses that vary greatly along depth. The test piece may be a "thin" piece having a thickness less than the diameter of the drill hole or it may be a "thick" piece having a thickness greater than the diameter of the drill hole. Uniform stress is suitable for testing thin and thick workpieces, while non-uniform stress is only suitable for testing thick workpieces.
