Scope
This part of ISO 13856 establishes general principles and specifies requirements for the design and testing of those pressure-sensitive protective devices, with or without a reset device, which are not described in either ISO 13856-1 or ISO 13856-2; The majority of these protective devices are manufactured for specific applications and are not commercially available. This part of ISO 13856 also contains specific requirements for the following pressure-sensitive protective devices: a) switching buffers; b) buttons; c) Switch lines. This part of ISO 13856 addresses the design of pressure-sensitive protective devices with a view to their safety and reliability, rather than their suitability for specific applications. NOTE 1 For the relationship between safety and reliability see ISO 13849-1:2006, 4.2. NOTE 2 The manufacturer and/or user of the machinery is responsible for installing appropriate types of protective devices based on a risk assessment. This part of ISO 13856 does not apply to the specification of dimensions of pressure-sensitive protective devices in relation to a specific application, or stopping devices according to IEC 60204-1, which are used only for the normal operation of machines, including emergency stops. NOTE 3 Specific requirements for particular applications are intended to be set out in appropriate Type C standards (see ISO 12100 and Introduction). Additional requirements may be necessary when pressure-sensitive protective devices are used in locations accessible to the elderly or disabled or to children. NOTE 4 Although requirements for the immunity of the device to electromagnetic interference are specified, these do not cover all aspects of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
