This standard specifies a method for determining the total oxygen content of metal powders by high temperature reduction extraction. By agreement, this method can also be used to determine the total oxygen content of sintered metals. This procedure applies to all powders of metals, alloys, carbides and their mixtures that are not volatile under the experimental conditions. The sample can be used in powder form or as a compact. The process is applied to the powder as delivered, but it must not contain any lubricant additive or binder. If such substances are present, the process may only be used if these substances are first completely removed by a process that does not affect the oxygen content of the powder. This standard must be used in conjunction with ISO 4491-1.
