This International Standard specifies a method for determining the fineness of grinding (graininess, grain fineness) of pigmented coating materials, printing inks and similar products using a suitable measuring instrument having a scale graduated in micrometers. It is applicable to all types of liquid, pigmented coating materials and similar products, except for products that contain plate-shaped pigments (e.g. glass plates, iron mica, zinc plates). Of the three measuring devices mentioned in 4.1, the measuring device with a range of 100 µm is suitable for general use. The measuring device with the 50 µm range and especially the measuring device with the 25 µm range only provide reliable results if they are handled by trained laboratory personnel. Special care is required when evaluating readings < 10 µm.
