Scope
1.1 This standard specifies the use of multidimensional chromatography to determine the content of saturated hydrocarbons, olefins, aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds in gasoline. The content of each hydrocarbon can be reported in terms of the number of carbon atoms or the total amount. 1.2 This standard is applicable to the determination of gasoline with a total aromatic content not greater than 50% (volume fraction), a total olefin content not greater than 30% (volume fraction), and an oxygenated compound content not greater than 15% (volume fraction). 1.3 This standard is not applicable to the determination of individual hydrocarbon components other than benzene. 1.4 The oxygen-containing compounds listed in the ASTM D4815 standard will not interfere with the determination of hydrocarbon components by this method. Within this series of samples, this standard has determined the following oxygenated compounds: methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethanol, ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME). Other oxygenated compounds can be quantitatively determined using ASTM D4815 or ASTM D5599 standards. 1.5 This standard does not apply to M85 and E85 fuels containing 85% methanol and ethanol.
