Scope
This standard specifies the methylene blue spectrophotometric method for the determination of anionic surfactants in aqueous solutions. This method is suitable for the determination of low concentration methylene blue active substances (MBAS), that is, anionic surface active substances, in drinking water, surface water, domestic sewage and industrial wastewater. Under the experimental conditions, the main analytes are LAS, sodium alkylsulfonates and sodium fatty alcohol sulfates, but some positive and negative interferences may be present (see Chapter 8). When a cuvette with a 10mm optical path is used and the sample volume is 100m1, the minimum detection concentration of this method is 0.05mg/LLAS, and the detection limit is 2.0mg/LLAS.
