This guideline serves for a better assessment of the surface texture in the active area of tooth flank and fillet. It is confined to the measurement by means of stylus instruments, as this is the most commonly used method in gear metrology. Apart from this method, other methods such as scanning microscopy, scattered- light methods and interferometry can also be applied. Comparability of the measurement results of the various methods is not ensured. The tolerances specified for the gear accuracy classes in accordance with DIN 3961 do not include any requirements with respect to the surface texture. These shall be specified as and where required, and can be entered in the drawing, in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1302.
