This standard specifies the safety requirements and test methods for the design and structure of portable forestry chain saws (see Figure 1). This standard applies to chain saws that are newly designed and finalized. This standard does not apply to tall chain saws. This standard proposes methods to eliminate or reduce various hazards caused by the use of chain saws, and specifies the information requirements for safe operation provided by the manufacturer. This standard does not propose technical measures for reducing noise and vibration hazards, because different methods for reducing noise and vibration hazards are related to technologies adopted by manufacturers through various professional books or professional institutions. Appendix A lists some significant hazards for which the hazard level should be reduced. This standard does not address the environmental hazards of chain saws.
